Revitalising Morocco’s Landscapes Through Tree Planting

Driving Sustainability, Transforming Communities

In the heart of Morocco’s arid regions, where desertification threatens livelihoods and ecosystems, Carbon Miles has played a pivotal role in fostering change. Through the support of our users, we’ve partnered with local communities to restore degraded lands, combat climate change, and create sustainable opportunities for the people who call this region home.

The Challenge: A Nation Fighting Desertification

Morocco is on the frontlines of the climate crisis, with large parts of the country experiencing severe desertification. This process, driven by deforestation, overgrazing, and climate change, has left the land barren, reduced agricultural productivity, and displaced communities.

Without intervention, the cycle of environmental degradation threatened to worsen, leaving vulnerable populations with limited resources and uncertain futures.

The Solution: Restoring the Green Belt

With funding from Carbon Miles, we joined forces with Moroccan environmental organisations to plant over 250,000 trees in areas most affected by desertification. This initiative focuses on:

  • Soil Restoration: Planting native tree species, such as argan and olive trees, to stabilise the soil and prevent further erosion.
  • Water Retention: Trees act as natural water catchment systems, improving the availability of water for crops and communities.
  • Economic Development: The program provides employment opportunities and supports the growth of agroforestry industries, such as argan oil production.

The Results: A Greener, Stronger Morocco

After just two years, the initiative has delivered significant environmental, economic, and social benefits:

  • Carbon Sequestration: The trees planted are projected to absorb over 800,000 tonnes of CO2, helping offset the emissions of Carbon Miles users.
  • Ecosystem Revival: Native vegetation and wildlife are returning to areas that were previously barren, restoring balance to local ecosystems.
  • Economic Opportunities: Over 1,500 jobs have been created, particularly for women in rural communities who now produce and sell argan oil as part of the agroforestry program.
  • Water Management: Improved soil quality and vegetation have enhanced water retention, reducing the impact of droughts on agriculture.

A Story of Renewal

Fatima’s Journey

Fatima, a 45-year-old widow from a rural village in the Souss-Massa region, is one of the many beneficiaries of the project. Before the initiative, she struggled to make ends meet, relying on sporadic farming income in a harsh and unforgiving environment.

Through the tree-planting program, Fatima now works in an argan oil cooperative established as part of the project. Her income has not only improved but has allowed her to send her children to school and invest in better farming tools for her small plot of land.

“This project has given us hope,” Fatima shares. “The trees are bringing life back to the land, and now, we have a future to look forward to.”

Why It Matters

The Morocco project highlights the far-reaching benefits of tree planting: it’s not just about offsetting carbon emissions, but about creating resilient communities, restoring biodiversity, and combating the effects of climate change. Every mile driven by Carbon Miles users contributes to initiatives like this, making a tangible difference for the planet and its people.
